Andrea wasn't able to come out to the Russian River with me on the weekend because of her work schedule, so she went mid week with a friend, Niccole. They had had fun hiking and spending time with the group of friends that were down there. They went down on Wednesday, which happened to be the Summer Solstice. Summer solstice up here is unique in that the sun is down for only a couple hours. And of those hours much of it is kind a twilight darkness. Alaskan do different things for solstice, party, ski, softball, motorcycling, or nothing, are just a few of the things they do. Niccole's husband Kyle and I drove down to the river after work to try our hand a some summer solstice fishing. It was a great time to get out and enjoy being with good friends. Kyle and I had our own bear scare on the way out. Although we didn't see it, some people with a different perspective told us the bear was very close to us in some brush. It's the first time, I've drawn my hand gun in anticipation of a bear encounter.
Andrea and Niccole had some nice shots of a brown bear sow and cubs that were hanging out around the river. Although the bears are acclimated to people and somewhat comfortable with people (simple because there are so many people at the river on a regular basis) these animals are not something to be taken lightly. Their mood can change in a heart beat and it is difficult to read their temperament, especially a defensive sow with cubs. Andrea did a good job of staying out of the way of the bears and got some good photos to share.
